Weekly Update on the EU Elections, Part 1

-Danish national TV (DR) was going to cut most debates and information on the EU elections (but has decided to include it anyway after some parties complained). You cannot blame them: if Berlusconi can do it, why not Danish "public service"? I will do my tiny part that the elections are a little more in the media, so here are some observations of the EP election in Denmark this week:

-Danish newspapers have started their "which candidate do you agree with" sites on the internet, and as always, the question are completely irrelevant. "Do you agree that the CAP should be reformed?" always yields the same answer as "Do you believe this question is stupid?"

-And why the hell does everyone keep talking about Turkish membership, in particular the Conservatives Bendt Bendtsen, Jan Køpke or DF's Morten Messerschmidt, who all seem to have a complete Turkey fixation? By the time Turkish membership becomes relevant in the job of an MEP, these gentlemen will either be in a retirement home!

-Jens Rohde from Venstre has said that he doesn't see it as his job to inform Danes on what happens in the EP, but to bring Denmark to the EP. Well, it does sound tempting to send him to a place we know nothing about and hear nothing from him any more.

-DSU has sent out a campaign poster reminescent of an old Danish Morten Korch movie, where the opposition candidates are the villains, and the Social Democracts are the heroes. The poster is hilarious, and the most unrealistic part of it is Dan Jørgensen as the victor of the financial crisis. But you have to give it to them: it is about the most serious media exposure Dan Jørgensen, Mikkel Schøler or malou Lunerød have had in the campaign.

-Went to a campaign meeting at Copenhagen University where six candidates were supposed to show up, but Claus Larsen Jensen from the Social Democrats never showed up. I wonder if he will do the same in the EP, where money is given for showing up?

-Song of the week I would like to hear a candidate sing: Mette Abildgaard, "Follow Da Leader" (SoCa Boys).

-Candidate I would most like to have a beer with this week: Louise Feilberg from Venstre, because she surprised me positively.
